Holy Guacamole

This weekend had far too few hours for my “to-do” list. John and I checked off most of our spring cleaning, which involved two days of packing up my fall/winter clothes and organizing my spring/summer wardrobe, spring landscaping, prepping our vegetable garden, deep cleaning our house and trying out new recipes. We did manage to slip in a bit of fun cheering on our favorite t-ball player (nephew Logan) and favorite up-and-coming t-ball player (nephew Camden). While they are getting a little too cool for sugars from me, Uncle J is definitely in demand. After our ball field fun and a few sugars from the kiddos, John took me to dinner at a little space that is one of our new favorite spots.

With flavors that hit you like a tidalwave, Atlanta’s Taquiera Tsunami merges two of my favorite cuisines from Far East and South of the Border. The Latin-Asian fusion leaves your taste buds begging for more. Even more, the people running the show are awesome – Anne, our super cute waitress and Rob, the gracious co-owner/co-chef. It only gets better, percentages of their top selling tacos support Tsunami relief efforts with the Red Cross. I love good food…I admire good people. And let’s be honest. The Sangria is quite nice, too.

When We Speak

The first Thanksgiving I lived in New York, my family came into the city to spend the holiday. We, of course, watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and feasted in my small apartment on our family’s traditional Thanksgiving meal. We toured the entire city in the five days my mom, dad, brother and sister-in-law were visiting. While I have many wonderful memories of that special holiday, there’s one that always stands out – our entrance into St. Patrick’s Cathedral. As we stepped in off the busy Fifth Avenue sidewalk, we were welcomed by the angelic choir singing Amazing Grace. The music moved me to tears, and since then, any trip to or by St. Patrick’s reminds me of the need to find simplicity in the busiest of days.

Last Sunday morning, I left my hotel early in the morning to take a quiet stroll to Central Park before brunch. There’s nothing like NYC early on a Sunday Morning. The streets are quiet and the sidewalks are abandoned. With the millions of people living in New York, a Sunday morning can feel like the streets of a quaint town. As I made my way up Fifth Avenue, I saw members of St.Patrick’s as well as a number of tourists walking into the cathedral. I, too, joined them to flood myself with memories of a beloved landmark in our country.

As I crossed from the West to East side of the street, I looked up to see a very moving sign, which is part of the restoration campaign of St. Patrick’s. St. Patrick’s was paid for through the contributions of poor immigrants and prominent citizens. The cornerstone was laid in 1858 and her doors were opened in 1879. Plans are now in place for interior and exterior preservation of this gerat cathedral. You, too, can be a part of Restoring St. Patrick’s Cathedral by visiting here.

I recently re-watched The September Issue, a documentary on Anna Wintour, VOGUE and the most awaited issue of each year – September. The power of Anna Wintour blows my mind. Considered one of the most influential women in the world, ladies around the globe rush to mail boxes, bookstores and news stands to grab each month’s issue of VOGUE to feed ourselves the latest fashion nosh. I can’t remember a day when I wasn’t hungry for the next issue, especially September. Last year, the most beautiful book was published: VOGUE The Covers. Every cover, every issue, since the beginning of VOGUE. Ah-flipping-mazing!

My Spring loves include Peonies in a Mint Julep cup, the new fabric on our vintage sofa, the red soles of my birthday Christian Louboutins and VOGUE The Covers.

Let’s Talk About Food!

The weekend in New York was simply perfect, and I took advantage of so much the city has to offer. I’ll tell you all about my shopping extravaganza later on because, right now, I want to talk about food. I ate my way through New York. There’s no question about it. From Greek Cuisine to afternoon tea, food was the highlight of my weekend (aside from a few splurges for my closet, of course)! I was so happy to share these delicious meals with friends that are so dear to my heart. These are a few of my favorites from the weekend…

New York was AMAZING! As though it could have been anything less than. A detailed recap will come later, but the highlights of my long weekend in the city involved much needed time in Central Park, spring wardrobe updates, delicious food and great company. Early Friday morning, my dear friend Katherine and I went for a long run through the park, and the cafe latte above was the treat following that run. Truth be told, everything is better in NYC. More details on my wonderful birthday weekend to follow… xoxo

Ageless Beauty

With 29 approaching quickly, it’s been impossible not to pick apart my face and imagine all the things I need to be doing to preserve my youth. We as women have been bombarded with beauty treatments to maintain the fountain of youth and images (photoshop enhanced, of course) of what we should look like. Now, enter Iris Apfel, the 90 years young woman who is the new face for MAC Cosmetics. Iris celebrates her age and every beautiful line on her face. Quite the fashionista, she’s uniquely Iris. I think she’s BEAUTIFUL! Don’t you?

Shamrock Truffles

I don’t just love St. Patrick’s Day, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE St. Patrick’s Day! It may be in part that my birthday falls on the day after (my most favorite holiday!), but I have always LOVED celebrating my Irish roots on this day. Since I’m in New York for St. Patrick’s Day, John and I celebrated last weekend with Shamrock Truffles (commonly known as Oreo Truffles – recipe below). This oh-so-delicious, yet 0h-so-ridiculously easy treat is equal to finding a pot of gold – a no bake, three ingredient dessert equals JACKPOT!

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY (a little early), friends! Wear your best green…if you’re looking for ideas, you can always look back here.

Shamrock Truffles (Oreo Truffles)

36 Oreos (so maybe I did count them out)

1 Pkg Cream Cheese, softened

White Chocolate Bark, melted (follow instructions on packaging)

–Crush Oreos in a large mixing bowl; mix in softened cream cheese; roll into balls (about 46 bites of YUM).

–Dip in melted white chocolate. Use two forks to lift and drain chocolate.

–Place on parchment paper, add green sprinkles and refrigerate for at least one hour.

Proudly Introducing…

Meet Jack. Also, meet my rug, day two. As I was snapping a few photos Sunday night, Jack flew into the living room insisting on his own photo shoot. You must understand, taking a photo of Baby J is nearly impossible. His multi-colored eyes and severe underbite (not pictured), combined with his greyhound speed do not allow for a ton of frame worthy photos. Rewind to December 1, 2011: Jack received all of his advent calendar treats during our holiday photo shoot while I begged him to do all of his tricks and commands, which he did ONLY long enough to receive his treat. With each click of the camera, I watched my dreams of the perfect Christmas card end with a blurred vision of my little angel.

When all 8.6 pounds of this rambunctious, squirrel-chasing, hole-digging, anything-licking, everyone-loving mama’s boy posed himself perfectly and barked for my attention, there was no way I was passing on the opportunity to catch this sweet face. His quizzical expression sums his little personality up perfectly. While he may have nothing to do with food or fashion, he’s definitely family. Friends, Meet Jack. The cutest kid on the block.

Far East

Meanswear + Stripes + Comfort = Obsession! I’m even more intrigued by the story of Charles Philip, his love for a striped shirt and the journey to creating his line of shoes with his best pal Sheila Pitigala. It was actually John who purchased these for me – I hadn’t been introduced to these great shoes. Since then, I’ve added a few more to my wardrobe. You can read about (and shop) the Charles Philip Shanghai collection here.
